These are all the links to sites and news related to community ovens that I have been able to find.
If you know of any that are not in this list, please let me know about them.
If you run a community oven, and you are willing to share information about it, I would be very happy
to have a picture and a description of your oven, its location, and its schedule, which I would then
add to the main community oven page.
One important distinction to keep in mind is that a community oven is not necessarily a
public oven. Each organization that runs a community oven is allowed to determine the policies for
it, including who gets to use it.
Some community ovens might also be park ovens, which is to say that the oven is in a public park.
There still may be rules about who can use the oven, but it is possible that the range of potential
users might be wider than for community ovens.
“Community” does not equal “public.”
I have created a map of community ovens in the US.

Community Ovens
These are ovens shared by some community currently. Frequency of use can be as low as annually and as high as weekly. The community may be small or large. Some ovens in gardens might also function as community ovens, so looking at garden ovens under cob and brick ovens might be worthwhile.

- I’m sure that by now you’ve already noticed that we’re huge fans of the Tenderloin National Forest, as we think it’s one of the best things that has happened to this neighborhood. There are many reasons to love them madly, but today I discovered a new one: they have a pizza oven! And they use it every so often when they have an art opening, community gathering, concert or party.

Back in September, I had the pleasure of meeting her there in one of them, which she dubbed “Fresh from the oven” because of the outdoor pizza oven which is a community oven for the neighborhood’s enjoyment.

Carbondale Community Oven - Home
- In the short few weeks since the Carbondale Community Oven got off the ground, we're making progress. We've found a magnificent, centrally-located site, at the new Third Street Center, located in the former elementary school, an easy walk from the center of town with bike path and highway access as well. Sitting at the foot of Mount Sopris, the oven will be located in the common area, with plenty of room for landscaping, picnic tables, and even a playground for the kids. At least one of the resident nonprofit organizations in the center has expressed an interest in working with us to create a wood-fired baking project for kids.

Experimental Station, Hyde Park/Woodlawn, Chicago | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
- Submitted by Annie L. When I took this picture, I had stumbled upon the end of a "Bread Bake," and there were a couple of guys playing soccer in the driveway while the others cleaned up from an afternoon of baking goodies in Experimental Station's brick oven. You never know what sort of event will happen next at Experimental Station; the farmer's market brings crowds that fill the streets on Saturdays, Backstory Cafe attracts lingerers over coffee or weekend brunch, and Blackstone Bikes is always overflowing with the energy of kids playing and machines springing to life. I made a point to visit the first day I moved to Chicago, and I sat for hours under the trees in the garden, chatting with the chickens and neighbors who had also come to pass a beautiful afternoon outside. Almost a year later, it's still where I go to get my hands greasy in the bike shop, to see unusual events, to find a welcoming environment, and to spend time with friends, young and old, from all walks of life. Bridging Woodlawn and Hyde Park neighborhoods at E 61st St and Blackstone Ave, Experimental Station is accessible via plenty of buses and the Metra South Shore trains, and the space hosts numerous plays, concerts, lectures, and other public events year-round. Vote for your favorite entry to the "What Makes Your Place Great? Your Secret Corner of Chicago" contest!

Community Oven - Hampedia
- The Community Oven was built in the Spring of 2009 by Evan Thaler-Null and Felix Lufkin. It is a wood-fired baking oven that is open to the public to use at any time. The oven was constructed out of natural and scavenged materials including: clay dug from the Connecticut River, sawdust from the mill on Route 9, crushed stone from the quarry on Mount Norwottuck, manure from Bay Road, and lots of found parts, pieces, and buried treasures from the nooks and crannies of Hampshire campus. The oven dome is made out of a natural building material called Cob.

- I became acquainted with David Cargo several years ago when I attended my first meeting of the very active St. Paul Bread Club. The setting was perfect: a brisk Saturday morning at the St. Agnes Bread Company in St. Paul. There must have been three dozen of us there from all across the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area - young, older, many of us with flour-dusts on our sweaters, and others new to the wonderful world of crusty hearth breads.

Community Bread Oven — Harrison Neighborhood Association
- In 2014, HNA & Redeemer Church completed construction on an outdoor,
wood-burning community oven after receiving a small grant and hours of
volunteer work to construct this community asset.
The intent of the community oven is to have a gathering space in the
neighborhood for residents to build and connect with one another while
eating freshly baked goods. Just like any other oven, this wood burning
cooker can make breads, rolls, pizzas, kebabs--whatever you'd like!
The community bread oven is located on the corner of 4th & Morgan Ave
behind the Redeemer community gardens.

Our gesture will give you a chance to help build the next community brick oven in Pittsburgh by your contribution of a brick in exchange for a loaf of bread (on opening night and the following Saturday mornings). You will see the oven at its beginning and get a sense of what it looks like, how it goes together, how it works, what it can accomplish. This installation is in memory of the late Antonio Branduzzi, baker, teacher, friend and master of the brick oven. Ray spent most of his career in advertising, was elected to the Ad Federation Hall of Fame, and still works as a writer and creative consultant. His business card reads, “Writer, Baker, Music Maker,” and he preaches “The Pursuit,” to anyone who will listen. One of those pursuits is the Community Brick Bread Oven and how it brings folks together. Folks like you.

His vision is more community ovens - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
- Ray Werner is one baker who doesn't mind if his bread makes people think of bricks. He's the guy behind "Bricks for Bread: The Pittsburgh Community Brick Oven Project." The driving force behind the community oven that opened last summer in Braddock, he's now hoping to collect enough bricks, from all over the region, for the next of what he hopes will be a series of ovens. He says interested communities include Wilkinsburg, Polish Hill and the North Side. He's "built" the beginnings of an oven as his part of "Gestures: An Exhibition of Small, Site-Specific Works," which opens tomorrow at the North Side's Mattress Factory. Bring a brick to the opening and he'll give you a slice of brick-oven-baked bread and tell you more about his vision of "a community of community brick ovens, and

Bringing people together with brick-oven-baked bread - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
- When Canadian Shauna Kearns came to Pittsburgh last fall for Chatham University’s two-year masters program in food studies, she assumed all cities had a web of community ovens where people lined up to bake bread — just like Toronto, her hometown. “Or maybe I didn’t realize how important it was for me to cook in an outdoor wood oven,” she says. “I grew up in a family that treasured the outdoors,” says the 25-year-old, who played goalie on McGill University’s field-hockey team while earning an undergraduate degree in business. She twists her honey-blonde hair in a work-friendly braid and wears shades that, when doffed, reveal a raccoon-style tan and ready-to-laugh aquamarine eyes. “The first time I baked bread, I just fell in love with the process.” She had to cross a river to find herself

Fired Up: A community oven rises in Braddock | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
- The first community oven in the Pittsburgh area is on a parking lot directly across the street from U.S. Steel's Edgar Thomson plant, the only working blast furnace remaining from Pittsburgh's steel-making days. The oven is one more piece in the puzzle that is the re-purposing of Braddock as an artist's destination and once-again-vibrant community. "The steel furnaces built Braddock," says Mayor John Fetterman. "It might take another kind of furnace, an oven, to help rebuild it." Last December, Ray Werner, bread baker, community activist and godfather of the oven project, explained to Mr. Fetterman why a wood-fired community baking oven -- one that the public shares -- would be a good fit for Braddock. The mayor had an immediate reaction. "We'll do it," he said. "How much? How can I help?

Daily Kos: Bread from the Community Oven
- I was watching Chronicle, a half hour news magazine on a local Boston station, when they did a story on Norwich, Vermont's community oven. Two days a week, bakers make bread and other baked goods in a common oven and one day a week it can be used by anybody who wants to bake. There's a pot luck, stone soup pizza dinner on Tuesdays, too.

Community Bread Oven on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
- Uploaded by Peter Brink Norwich, Vermont Built by the community for folks to bake bread without charge, it now is the venue for regular pizza events, with two expert volunteers making pizza in the oven and the rest of us bringing other food - truly a great community gathering place. The oven was built in the early 1990s and is modeled after the old Quebec ovens - no chimney and some 9 feet in depth.
