This is a collection of links (not all recently verified)
mostly relating to wood-fired ovens for baking bread and pizza.
This page was automatically generated from my Firefox bookmarks.html file on

Linking directly to anchors in this page could result in broken links when I add headings.
These are all the links to sites and news related to community ovens that I have been able to find.
If you know of any that are not in this list, please let me know about them.
If you run a community oven, and you are willing to share information about it, I would be very happy
to have a picture and a description of your oven, its location, and its schedule, which I would then
add to the main community oven page.
I have created a map of community ovens in the US.

Community Ovens
These are ovens shared by some community currently. Frequency of use can be as low as annually and as high as weekly. The community may be small or large. Some ovens in gardens might also function as community ovens, so looking at garden ovens under cob and brick ovens might be worthwhile.

- I’m sure that by now you’ve already noticed that we’re huge fans of the Tenderloin National Forest, as we think it’s one of the best things that has happened to this neighborhood. There are many reasons to love them madly, but today I discovered a new one: they have a pizza oven! And they use it every so often when they have an art opening, community gathering, concert or party.

Back in September, I had the pleasure of meeting her there in one of them, which she dubbed “Fresh from the oven” because of the outdoor pizza oven which is a community oven for the neighborhood’s enjoyment.

Carbondale Community Oven – Home
- In the short few weeks since the Carbondale Community Oven got off the ground, we're making progress. We've found a magnificent, centrally-located site, at the new Third Street Center, located in the former elementary school, an easy walk from the center of town with bike path and highway access as well. Sitting at the foot of Mount Sopris, the oven will be located in the common area, with plenty of room for landscaping, picnic tables, and even a playground for the kids. At least one of the resident nonprofit organizations in the center has expressed an interest in working with us to create a wood-fired baking project for kids.

Experimental Station, Hyde Park/Woodlawn, Chicago | Flickr – Photo Sharing!
- Submitted by Annie L. When I took this picture, I had stumbled upon the end of a "Bread Bake," and there were a couple of guys playing soccer in the driveway while the others cleaned up from an afternoon of baking goodies in Experimental Station's brick oven. You never know what sort of event will happen next at Experimental Station; the farmer's market brings crowds that fill the streets on Saturdays, Backstory Cafe attracts lingerers over coffee or weekend brunch, and Blackstone Bikes is always overflowing with the energy of kids playing and machines springing to life. I made a point to visit the first day I moved to Chicago, and I sat for hours under the trees in the garden, chatting with the chickens and neighbors who had also come to pass a beautiful afternoon outside. Almost a year later, it's still where I go to get my hands greasy in the bike shop, to see unusual events, to find a welcoming environment, and to spend time with friends, young and old, from all walks of life. Bridging Woodlawn and Hyde Park neighborhoods at E 61st St and Blackstone Ave, Experimental Station is accessible via plenty of buses and the Metra South Shore trains, and the space hosts numerous plays, concerts, lectures, and other public events year-round. Vote for your favorite entry to the "What Makes Your Place Great? Your Secret Corner of Chicago" contest!

Community Oven – Hampedia
- The Community Oven was built in the Spring of 2009 by Evan Thaler-Null and Felix Lufkin. It is a wood-fired baking oven that is open to the public to use at any time. The oven was constructed out of natural and scavenged materials including: clay dug from the Connecticut River, sawdust from the mill on Route 9, crushed stone from the quarry on Mount Norwottuck, manure from Bay Road, and lots of found parts, pieces, and buried treasures from the nooks and crannies of Hampshire campus. The oven dome is made out of a natural building material called Cob.

Local baker shaping a bread tradition

Fired Up: A community oven rises in Braddock
- Last December, Ray Werner, bread baker, community activist and godfather of the oven project, explained to Mr. Fetterman why a wood-fired community baking oven

- Baking and breaking bread have been connective human activities for millenia. Now, an old tradition is being renewed. Brick bread ovens are spring up across America and Europe. In our area, Braddock has a community bread oven; Polish Hill may be the next community to continue this trend. The PHCA has been talking with Ray Werner, the guy behind “Bricks for Bread: The Pittsburgh Community Brick Oven Project.”

- Ray Werner Bricks for Bread (The Pittsburgh Community Brick Oven Project) (2009) bricks, bread, firewood This installation will let you feel of the embrace of a brick oven and imagine what it can do for your neighborhood, your community. Our gesture will give you a chance to help build the next community brick oven in Pittsburgh by your contribution of a brick in exchange for a loaf of bread (on opening night and the following Saturday mornings). You will see the oven at its beginning and get a sense of what it looks like, how it goes together, how it works, what it can accomplish. This installation is in memory of the late Antonio Branduzzi, baker, teacher, friend and master of the brick oven. Ray spent most of his career in advertising, was elected to the Ad Federation Hall of Fame, and still works as a writer and creative consultant. His business card reads, “Writer, Baker, Music Maker,” and he preaches “The Pursuit,” to anyone who will listen. One of those pursuits is the Community Brick Bread Oven and how it brings folks together. Folks like you.

- I was watching Chronicle, a half hour news magazine on a local Boston station, when they did a story on Norwich, Vermont's community oven. Two days a week, bakers make bread and other baked goods in a common oven and one day a week it can be used by anybody who wants to bake. There's a pot luck, stone soup pizza dinner on Tuesdays, too.

- Uploaded by Peter Brink Norwich, Vermont Built by the community for folks to bake bread without charge, it now is the venue for regular pizza events, with two expert volunteers making pizza in the oven and the rest of us bringing other food – truly a great community gathering place. The oven was built in the early 1990s and is modeled after the old Quebec ovens – no chimney and some 9 feet in depth.

- The focaccia is delicious. It's a simple square made of roasted organic potatoes and garlic, but there's something special about the crunchy crust. It simply tastes better than any other focaccia I've had; it's so rustic, sweet and savory. And it's all thanks to the 10-minutes it spent roasting inside…

- Mention of the Mile End Bread Oven: On Saturday evening I went to a meeting about the outdoor community bread oven (located at Clark & Arcade) in the neighbourhood of Mile End. There is another meeting/Workshop this Saturday so anybody interested in the following: Bread, Breadmaking, Community action and delicious homemade pizza should consider this an invitation to attend.
-
» Pizza for the masses • Spacing Montreal
- An underused park in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood is getting some attention since some area residents built a wood-fire oven there. Dubbed “The Park With No Name”, the space had been an empty overgrown lot, surrounded by a 10-foot chain-link fence tucked in by the Van Horne overpass, on the corner of Clark and Arcade. Last Saturday, about 30 people gathered for a community pay-what-you-can pizza dinner.
-
URBANPHOTO » The Mystery is Solved
- A wood-fired pizza oven has even been built in the Park With No Name, ostensibly for community use, but a conflict with the city has restricted its use and might even see the oven demolished altogether.

- Mile-End Community Bread Oven This group is currently involved in trying to save the Mile End Bread Oven, part of the long tradition of outdoor bread ovens in Quebec, from city development. FARE OF THE COUNTRY – FARE OF THE COUNTRY – FRANCE'S VINTAGE VILLAGE OVENS – NYTimes.com
- Maurice Bal dusts a speck of flour from his thick woolen beret and with broad, rhythmic motions sweeps large, crackling rounds of sourdough bread from the wood-fired oven. He and his wife, Paule, working side by side, proceed quickly and nervously, arranging the dozen fragrant and thick-crusted loaves to cool along stone benches spread with golden straw. Wasting no motion, they refill the brick-lined oven with rustic bread tarts, showering them at the final moment with onions, apples, moist sugared plums, even hand-cracked walnuts. It's 9 A.M. on a gray day in Bugey, a remote patch of southeastern France in the department of Ain. For the first time since the Bals rose in the dark at 5 A.M., they have a chance to catch their breath, to smile, to chat about their lives and the bread rituals of this quiet region at the edge of the Savoy.
