There are several kinds of events scheduled or anticipated for 2010.
Bringing a notebook and a chair to the quarterly meetings is a really good idea.
As of January, 2010, only the first two meetings have dates set. There is no date set for a bake-off.
Klecko has said that the last to quarterly meetings will take place in September, October, or November.
He has also said that the topics of the two meetings would be a “delicatessen” meeting, and a bake-off as if under the rules of food rationing during World War II.
For the “delicatessen” meeting, he wants people make and bring breads suitable for being part of the selection at a deli. He has also given me permission to invite the participation of Slow Food Minnesota so that we will get a lot of interesting contributions to the meeting.
This will be a “Soup du jour” meeting, a meeting where you need to bring either bread or soup to share. The meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. and will last until about 1 p.m. There are several details you need to be aware of.
Each club member is required to bring either homemade soup or homemade bread.
There is limited seating. It would be a good idea for you to bring a portable chair.
There are very few electrical outlets. Don’t plan on being able to plug in a crockpot.
There is lots of oven space; if you have your soup in an ovenproof container, you can heat it in the ovens at St. Agnes. (Short pots are good; tall pots are bad.)
If you plan to serve soup, bring your own serving spoon or ladle. (Marking it with your name and phone number would also be a Good Idea.)
If you plan to eat soup, bring your own soup bowl and spoon.
It would be really nice if you brought the recipe for your soup or bread. The last time we had a meeting like this (02/09/2008), Martha Heisel compiled a list of the recipes (still available through the old recipe box page). Somebody might volunteer to compile the recipes for another collection.
Klecko said this would be a meeting where you bring a type of bread that you don’t make often, but that you still enjoy making. It’s a bread that is sort of “off the beaten path.”
As of January, 2010, there are four monthly meetings on the schedule. (You can volunteer to be a convener for your own local monthly meeting at a time and place convenient for you. Just let me know if you want to commit to doing it.)
The purpose of the monthly meetings is to increase opportunities for bakers to communicate. Participants are highly encouraged to share and discuss samples, cookbooks, and bread-related news.
The meetings below are listed in the order that they now fall in a normal month. (Some months are not normal because of holidays.) Sometimes a month may occur when the first Tuesday comes after the first Wednesday or when the second Wednesday is the day before a third Thursday.
What started as the Black Dog Slice, and later the Nina’s Slice has now become the Java Train Slice. This meeting now meets on the first Tuesday of the month. The meetings run from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. (or until we run out of things to talk about). The meetings are held in the Canadian Pacific Conference Room at the Java Train Cafe, 1341 Pascal Street, Saint Paul.

The Harvest Moon Slice meets on the second Wednesday of the month (barring the occasional holiday). The meetings run from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The meetings are at the Bean Good Cafe (formerly the Harvest Moon Coffee Shop) at 5101 Minnetonka Blvd in Saint Louis Park (east of Minn. 100).
This is the slice that Minneapolis and the western suburbs have been waiting for. Now you don’t have to travel all the way to Saint Paul to meet on a monthly basis.

The Eden Prairie Center Slice has undergone a transformation. It is now another evening slice. We are hoping this will increase the opportunity for people to attend. The day of the month has also shifted. After kicking around different possible locations, Bill Middeke decided that keeping the Eden Prairie Center location was the best alternative. It’s accessible, free, and people can still buy a variety of food and drink in the food court if they want to.
The Eden Prairie Center Slice after Feb. 2010 meets on the third Monday of the month. The meetings run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (instead of the old noon to 1 p.m.). The meetings are (still) at the Food Court at Eden Prairie Center. Bill Middeke is usually seated in front of Dairy Queen/Orange Julius.

I would consider the Dec. 20 date tentative subject to a decision by the slice attendees on whether it’s too close to Christmas to hold a meeting.
The Trotter’s Slice meets on the fourth Monday of the month (January through November). The meetings run from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. The meetings are at Trotter’s Cafe and Bakery at 232 N. Cleveland Ave. (by Cleveland and Marshall) in Saint Paul.

There are no field trips currently planned for 2010.
The first SPBC picnic was held on August 10, 2008.
The 2010 SPBC Picnic will be at Silverwood Park on August 8, 2010.
We have permission to use the park’s wood-burning oven and the White Oak Classroom beside it. The classroom has a small kitchen area and a bathroom.
Send me an e-mail if you want to be on the committee.
Here is the text for the announcement.

(1) Don’t bring uncooked meats as topping; we don’t want anyone to get sick!
(2) Beer and wine in bottles are allowed.
Please RSVP to Canan Karatekin, karat004@umn.edu so we know how many people to expect.
Slow Food Minnesota will be invited to the delicatessen meeting, whenever it is held.
October 16 is the World Day of Bread (at least according to this).
In 2010, that date falls on a Saturday. Maybe we can do something for that event.
